SEPA Instant is the fast, modern way to transfer money across Europe, with payments usually arriving within seconds.
However, because these payments move so fast, the "digital handshake" between us and the recipient’s payment service provider has to be perfect. If anything is slightly off, the recipient’s provider will return the money instantly to make sure it doesn't get lost.
Below are the some of most common reasons why this happens, and what you can do about it.
Common reasons why SEPA Instant payments fail
1. Technical timeouts
For an Instant payment to work, the recipient's bank must confirm they’ve received the money within 10 seconds. If their system is having a busy moment or a brief technical hiccup, they might miss that 10-second window. To be safe, they’ll automatically decline the payment and send it back to you.
2. The recipient’s account isn't "Instant-ready"
Even if the provider itself might support Instant payments, the specific account you’re sending to might not. This can happen with:
- Account type: Some specialized savings or business accounts aren't set up for instant transfers.
- Account status: If the account has been recently frozen or closed, the bank will reject the payment immediately.
- Limits: The person you are paying might have a limit on how much they can receive in a single day.
3. Standard checks
Payments occasionally undergo routine verification checks. If these standard procedures cannot be completed within the 10-second "Instant" timeframe, the recipient's provider will decline the transfer and return the funds to your account, so that you aren't left wondering where the money is.
What should I do next?
If your payment was returned, don't worry - your funds are safe. For reassurance, you can always download your account statement to check that the balance was indeed returned.
To get your payment through, try these steps:
-
Use standard SEPA instead
This is the best "Plan B." Standard payments don't have the strict 10-second rule, so they usually bypass the technical glitches that cause Instant payments to fail. It might take a few hours or until the next business day, but it’s very reliable. -
Double-check with the recipient
Ask them if their account is active and if they have any limits on receiving transfers. -
Break it up
If you’re sending a large amount, try sending a smaller "test" amount first to see if it clears.
